You may be interested in this list of hands-on college majors because the fields of study tend to be more fun. If you’re a kinesthetic learner, these majors are ideal. The careers that follow may also be more suited to someone who prefers doing things rather than spending most of the day at a desk.

Hands-on learning is based on the doing of something. It is the opposite of book learning. With hands-on learning, you do something applied like a lab experiment or work placement.

We analysed popular college majors to identify those with the most hands-on learning. While applied and experiential learning can be part of almost any college major, the following fields intrinsically rely on active participation rather than passive study.

1. Nursing

Clinical placements, simulation labs and supervised patient care.
Nursing students learn by examining patients, discussing symptoms, using medical equipment and carrying out clinical procedures. Much of the learning happens through direct contact, observation and repeated performance rather than reading or written assignments alone.

2. Education

Classroom observations, lesson delivery and student-teaching placements.
Education majors develop their skills by explaining ideas, leading activities and responding to students in real time. Classroom learning involves conversation, demonstration, observation and interaction rather than passive study.

3. Engineering

Benefits of Hands-On Learning

Hands-on learning is a good way to boost college learning outcomes. You get to do non-academic things that make a real impression. Unlike dry theory and facts, what you learn won’t soon be forgotten after the final exam.

Doing non-traditional forms of study has another important benefit. Learning that doesn’t revolve around exams better prepares you for getting a job. Hands-on experience can be a great advantage when going for graduate entry positions.

By doing a program with applied activities, you graduate with interesting experiences to include on your CV or resume. The activities also give you more to talk about during a job interview. That’s important to give you confidence and to allow you to demonstrate, using examples, that you know how to get things done.

Kinesthetic Learners

Kinesthetic learners learn best through movement, activity and direct experience. Internships, fieldwork and role-playing give them opportunities to learn by doing rather than mainly through reading or lectures.

Online students may instead complete group projects for real organisations. Business schools, for example, may partner with companies to give students applied work and assess how they perform.

2. Professional accreditation training placements

Some degrees require placements before students can graduate or enter the profession. Nursing students complete supervised clinical hours, while future teachers conduct classes and demonstrate that they can manage a classroom.

Clinical psychology and law may also require supervised professional training. Placements can form part of the degree or follow graduation as a separate accreditation requirement.

Professional placements generally occur near the end of a degree. They bring together years of academic study and test whether students are ready to perform in real workplaces.

The benefits are especially clear in globally oriented fields such as languages and international relations. Students in other majors can also gain independence, broader knowledge and memorable experiences to discuss in job applications and interviews.

5. Fieldwork and volunteering

Fieldwork and volunteering allow students to gain experience in their own communities. Opportunities may connect directly to a major or offer a chance to help others while developing confidence and initiative.

Self-improvement might be only a bus or bike ride away. Environmental science and geology students may travel farther for outdoor work, but many community organisations operate close to campus.

Students can join an existing project or help start one. Either option can create useful experience while contributing something worthwhile.

6. Simulations, games and role playing

Many courses use simulations, games and role playing to recreate situations students may face at work. Participants might act as professionals, clients or patients, or take part in social experiments.

Some opportunities will closely match your major, while others may help you test a different kind of work. A university education extends beyond lectures and assignments, especially when you take part in projects, workplaces and communities beyond the classroom.

  1. I did not have the most exciting in person classes when it was my time in college. It was plain ol boring lectures coupled with frequent exams. It was definitely boring and it didn’t excite me. I would definitely support Hands on Experiential learning because the learnings are more practical.

  2. If you are going to go the route of internships, just be sure you are getting real experience. I know in the US (where I am now, moved here for education), companies will take advantage of unpaid interns and use them for petty tasks anyone can do just so they can work less.

  3. Why can’t you have the best of both worlds? That’s why I have come to appreciate how more colleges and universities are incorporating hands-on and experiential learning into traditional learning environments. Internships have been around for the most part, but opening things up with avenues like role-playing, simulations, field work, etc. are all valuable.

Some people claim that you can’t learn a job in the classroom, but this article shows that classroom instruction (online or in-person) along with hands-on or experiential learning is the way to do things right. In terms of internships, make sure you research whether you’ll have a chance to do any work in the field (under supervision of course) rather than just riding a desk.

  5. Hands-on learning should be something every school and University out there uses. We want to help students become solid, knowledgeable individuals that improve society. For this, we need them to learn while they are doing. Theory will only get you so far and a hands-on approach will make sure some lessons are never forgotten. Education must head in this direction and leave behind the classic learning style. Universities that do not adopt experiential learning will soon find themselves without enough students to continue operating.
