Step closer to qualifying as a psychologist with the equivalent of an honours year.
After completing a Bachelor of Psychological Science, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology, or an equivalent degree, the next step to become a registered psychologist is known as Fourth Year Psychology. Some bachelor graduates achieve this via an invitational honours year. However, a popular alternative is an advanced graduate diploma.
The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) is a one-year program that balances coursework and research. It is a professional preparation course. Participants learn psychological assessment, intervention techniques, and ethics, alongside developing analytical and research skills. Graduates are eligible to apply for psychology masters and doctorate programs.
Online Courses in Australia
A big advantage of the Advanced Graduate Diploma in Psychology over an honours year is its online study option. Australian universities design these programs for working professionals to study part-time. You can complete your fourth year fully online while working or managing other commitments.

How Long Is the Program?
A Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced) requires 16 months of part-time study. This matches the commitment of an honours year in Australia. Typically, psychology honours includes four coursework subjects in the first semester. It ends with a dissertation in the second.
The program at UTS follows this structure. It combines four coursework subjects with two double-weighted research projects. This ensures a balance of theoretical learning and research practice.
Students tackle a (single-weighted) subject every two months. This leads to a total of 16 months of study. The structure and duration make the course broadly equivalent to an honours degree.

What Can You Do with this Qualification?
The purpose of the advanced graduate diploma is to further prepare you to become a psychologist. It builds on a Psychology Bachelor Degree or Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
If you're considering other careers, this program might not be the best fit. Your existing qualifications already open doors to roles in human resources, marketing, education, healthcare, and human services. Specialised studies in these fields might be more suitable if psychology isn't your calling.
This advanced grad dip prepares you for the postgraduate training need to become a registered psychologist. The next step is provisional registration as a psychologist and a 1-year Master of Professional Psychology, 2-year psychology masters, or doctorate.
