What is Health Psychology?
Health psychology is the use of communication, persuasion, and psychological treatment strategies to improve physical health and overall wellbeing. The discipline examines how mindset and behaviours influence physical health.
Drawing on research into mindset, behaviour, and disease management, practitioners develop strategies to encourage healthy habits and better manage illness.
Health psychologists prevent and remedy health issues through services such as:
- stress reduction workshops
- fitness and lifestyle programs
- dietary guidance
- addiction recovery support
- pain control methods
Practitioners may work with communities or individuals. Their role is to address the psychological influences that affect physical health, daily functioning, treatment adherence, and long-term wellbeing.
Role of Health Psychologists

Major barriers to good health include unhealthy eating, insufficient exercise, and poor stress management. Addiction, anxiety, and depression also have detrimental effects. Health psychologists help people understand how habits, emotions, beliefs, and stress responses can influence physical health.

In Australia, health psychologists work in hospitals, clinics, private practices, universities, public health bodies, and community centres. Employers also include government health departments, non-profits, and corporations with wellness programs.
In health-care teams, health psychologists provide psychological expertise for patient care. They may help patients manage illness, follow treatment plans, reduce stress, change habits, or cope with the emotional demands of poor health.

Difference Between a Health Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist
A health psychologist is not a clinical psychologist as such but is technically able to perform similar functions. In Australia, both are registered psychologists. The difference is not a strict legal boundary over who can treat mental health conditions. The difference is mainly training focus, Medicare recognition, insurer preferences, and professional competence.
Health psychologists focus on the connection between psychology and physical health. Their work often involves chronic illness, pain, stress, addiction, lifestyle change, treatment adherence, and recovery from illness or surgery. Clinical psychologists are more strongly associated with mental illness, diagnosis, complex psychological assessment, and treatment of severe or persistent disorders.
| Area | Health psychologist | Clinical psychologist |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Health behaviour, illness adjustment, pain, stress, lifestyle change, and disease management. | Mental illness, diagnosis, psychological assessment, and complex treatment. |
| Legal scope | Can assess and treat mental health conditions within training and competence. | Can assess and treat mental health conditions within training and competence. |
| Typical clients | People dealing with chronic illness, pain, addiction, stress, recovery, or health behaviour change. | People dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders, psychosis, eating disorders, or complex diagnosis. |
| Funding recognition | Usually receives the general psychologist Medicare rebate unless also clinically endorsed. | Usually attracts the higher clinical psychology Medicare rebate. |
A health psychologist can legally diagnose and treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. In many cases, health psychologists do this when the symptoms are connected with illness, injury, chronic pain, disability, or major life adjustment.
Professional competence still limits what any psychologist should take on. A health psychologist would usually refer highly complex psychiatric presentations to a clinical psychologist or another suitably trained clinician. Examples include severe schizophrenia, complex personality disorders, treatment-resistant eating disorders, and specialised diagnostic testing.
The simple distinction is that clinical psychology is usually the stronger fit for primary mental illness and complex diagnosis. Health psychology is usually the stronger fit when psychological care is tied to physical health, illness management, pain, prevention, habits, stress, and wellbeing.
