How Many Calories Burned in 8 Hours of Work | Exercise Study

Based on scientific studies of exercise, calories burned in 8 hours of work usually range from 780 to 1,400 calories for office to active jobs. Heavy manual work can go higher. We estimated energy expenditure using calorie-use calculators built from scientifically determined MET values.

Out of the different types of work, desk work is at the low end because sitting burns little more than resting. Standing itself makes little difference. Jobs burn much more energy when walking, lifting and other dynamic movements are regularly involved.

Study Method

We used popular calorie calculators that convert MET values into calorie counts based on body weight and activity time. The results are broadly consistent because the method is the same: calories burned = MET × body weight in kilograms × hours.

MET means metabolic equivalent of task. A MET value shows how much energy an activity uses compared with resting. Sitting is close to 1 MET. Walking, lifting and manual work have higher MET values.

MET values are based on exercise science studies that measure the oxygen or energy cost of different activities. Those values are collected in the Compendium of Physical Activities, which provides standard MET values for common activities, including work tasks.

Calories Burned in an 8-Hour Shift

A mostly seated office worker may burn around 780 to 900 calories during 8 hours of work, depending on body weight. The job uses mental energy, but the body is still close to a resting state. Typing, reading, meetings and computer work do not raise calorie burn very much.

  1. Mostly sitting: about 780 to 900 calories over 8 hours.
  2. Sitting with some standing and walking: about 900 to 1,100 calories.
  3. Active work: about 1,100 to 1,400+ calories, depending on the tasks.

Standing raises calorie burn slightly, but walking raises it much more. Light movement around an office or shop floor can push the estimate higher. Jobs with regular walking, lifting, bending or carrying can move into the 1,000 to 1,400 calorie range across an 8-hour shift. Heavy manual work can go above this range.

Calories Burned by Occupation

The calories burned, or energy intensity, associated with an occupation is estimated by breaking daily work into timed activities. For example, a classroom teacher might spend 2 hours seated at 1.3 MET, 3 hours standing at 1.8 MET, and 3 hours walking or supervising at 2.5 MET. The average is about 1.95 MET, or about 1,170 calories over 8 hours for a 75 kg person.

Office work has low calorie use because most of the day is spent sitting. A 75 kg person burns about 780 to 940 calories during an 8-hour office day, depending on how much standing and walking is included.

Jobs with frequent walking are moderately energy intensive and require around 1,000 to 1,400 calories over 8 hours. Teachers, nurses, childcare workers, retail staff and hospitality workers may spend hours walking and doing standing work such as assisting people.

Manual work burns large amounts of calories, albeit within a wide range. Mechanics, cleaners, construction workers, warehouse workers and landscapers may combine standing with lifting, carrying, bending and tool use. Heavy physical work can reach well above 1,400 calories over 8 hours.

Calories Burned Doing Office Work

Office work burns few calories because most of the day is spent sitting. A 75 kg person burns about 780 to 940 calories across an 8-hour office day. An entirely seated day is about 780 calories.

Desk work such as typing, reading, writing, thinking and meetings is treated as about 1.3 MET, just 30% above resting on a lounge watching TV. The calorie estimate is calculated from the MET value, along with body weight and time. Doubling body weight or the time spent doing an activity doubles energy use.

Standing Work Uses Only Slightly More Energy

Standing uses more energy than sitting, but the increase is small unless the person also moves. A study in BMC Public Health measured common sitting, standing and walking tasks. Standing still averaged 1.59 MET, only modestly above the sedentary threshold of 1.5 MET.

For a 75 kg person, 8 hours of standing still at 1.59 MET equals about 950 calories. That is higher than a fully seated office day, but not by enough to treat standing as exercise. Walking and active work are what change energy use more substantially.

Calories Burned in Physically Active Jobs

Physically active jobs burn more calories because the day includes standing, walking, lifting, bending, carrying or tool use. The estimate depends on the tasks, not just the job title. A quiet shift and a heavy shift in the same occupation can produce very different numbers.

The table uses broad estimates because active work varies so much. Walking raises calorie use significantly, while heavier manual tasks raise it further. Physically demanding work should also be supported with proper food around the shift, especially where the job involves hours of movement.
