Our AI Humanizer Test
We used a short passage to test how an AI humanizer changes AI detection results. The process had six steps, moving from ChatGPT generation to AI detection, humanization, grammar correction, and retesting.
1. Got ChatGPT to Generate Text
First, we asked ChatGPT to explain how an AI humanizer tool works in under 100 words. The response was a clean, direct explanation written in a typical AI-assisted style.
2. Tested the Original Text in ZeroGPT
Next, we copied the ChatGPT response into ZeroGPT. The detector classified the passage as AI-generated and returned a score of 100% AI/GPT.
3. Ran the Text Through Rephrasy
We then pasted the same ChatGPT text into Rephrasy. The humanizer rewrote the passage while keeping the same basic meaning. The wording, sentence structure, rhythm, and punctuation were all changed.
4. Tested the Humanized Text in ZeroGPT
The Rephrasy version was then tested in ZeroGPT. The result changed from 100% AI/GPT to 0% AI/GPT, showing that the rewritten text was no longer detected as AI-generated by that tool.
5. Asked ChatGPT to Correct the Grammar
The humanized version included minor punctuation and grammar irregularities. We then gave ChatGPT the instruction: “Surgically correct any grammatical errors in this text.”
6. Tested the Polished Text Again
Finally, we tested the polished version in ZeroGPT. The result remained 0% AI/GPT, meaning the grammar correction did not reverse the effect of the humanizer.
Does AI Humanizer Actually Work?
Yes, an AI humanizer works when your goal is to make AI-generated text look human written and pass AI detection screening tests. In our example, the test was the first one we ran and it worked.
ZeroGPT rated the original ChatGPT text as 100% AI/GPT generated. After we put the text through Rephrasy, the score dropped to 0% AI/GPT generated.
Clearly, results will vary based on the test conditions and tools used. But the principle that AI humanizer tools can be effective is proven in my mind. The text passed AI detection. And, as a human reading the text, the original text looks obviously AI-generated while the humanized text does not look obviously AI-generated.
How AI Humanizers Work
I got some help from AI to explain how the text humanizer works. Based on analysis of the changes, the tool worked by:
- Restructuring the opening sentence: The original started simply: “An AI humanizer tool rewrites AI-generated text.” Rephrasy changed this to: “A humanizer tool is designed to rewrite the text produced by various AI or similar NLG…” The same idea became longer and less predictable.
- Replacing common AI wording: The phrase “AI-generated text” was changed to “text produced by various AI or similar NLG (Natural Language Generation) systems.” The humanizer used a less common expression for the same thing.
- Changing the sentence rhythm: ChatGPT used a neat list: “sentence structure, word choice, rhythm, and tone.” Rephrasy moved toward a longer and less even structure, with phrases such as “odd sentence or word ordering; unusual word uses or coinages; repetition; potential loss of meaning.”
- Adding human-like irregularities: The humanized version included small quirks such as “i.e rewriting”, “A.I. generated”, “‘knock-out’”, and “too much~or too little~lexical variety.” These changed the punctuation pattern and made the text look less machine-polished.
- Keeping the basic meaning: The original said the tool makes text “sound more natural and conversational.” The humanized version said it makes text more “‘human-like’.” The wording changed heavily, but the central meaning stayed close enough.
- Moving away from the original AI pattern: The original paragraph had a clean explanatory flow. The humanized version broke that flow by changing sentence structure, wording, punctuation, and rhythm. That appears to be why the ZeroGPT score moved from 100% AI/GPT generated to 0% AI/GPT generated.
For me, an interesting part of the test was the impact on writing quality. AI-written content often has perfect grammar and efficient phrasing. But it can get boring to read. AI humanizer tools are not designed to improve writing quality as such, but it can be refreshing to read a different style of writing.
