Can You Study Online at QUT?

Yes, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) offers online courses through QUT Online and other online study options. Approximately 4,169 bachelor and 5,932 postgraduate students are enrolled in online programs.

Online learners make up about 20% of the student population, which classifies QUT as an open university.

Open Online Learning at QUT

As a student enrolled at QUT Online, you get freedom on how and when you study. QUT Online is for supported online courses such as graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and master’s degrees.

  • Study periods: In a QUT Online unit, a standard unit has eight weekly modules. A micro unit has four. One unit per teaching period may suit full-time workers, since QUT Online suggests 12 to 15 hours per unit each week.
  • Lessons: You do not attend regular lectures or tutorials. Learning happens in Canvas through videos, quizzes, podcasts, diagrams and written material. Units open before the teaching period starts.
  • Classmates: Discussion boards, study groups and live Collaborate sessions are the main contact points. Collaborate sessions run a few times during the teaching period and are normally recorded.

QUT also offers open online learning outside QUT Online, including short courses, MOOCs and microcredentials. Those courses can suit professional development or a specific skill area, but they are not the same as enrolling in a QUT Online qualification.
